The SRDC was represented in Washington, D.C. last week as Deputy Director Robin Weis, alongside Board Chairman Paul Langseth, attended the 2026 NADO & Development District Association of Appalachia (DDAA) Washington Conference in Arlington. Throughout the conference, attendees engaged in valuable discussions focused on strengthening rural communities and advancing economic development efforts. A standout session featured a panel of philanthropic leaders who shared practical strategies for diversifying funding streams. The discussion highlighted how rural stakeholders can build capacity, cultivate authentic relationships, and leverage philanthropic partnerships to support long-term sustainability and success. Attendees also heard from political analyst Charles Cook, founder of The Cook Political Report with Amy Walter, who provided an insider’s perspective on the current political landscape, including the balance of power in Congress and upcoming elections. In addition, federal leaders from HUD, USDOT, USDOL, USDA, and the U.S. Economic Development Administration shared timely updates on grant programs, funding opportunities, and evolving priorities—including insights on how artificial intelligence is shaping future initiatives. Following the plenary sessions, NADO members traveled to Capitol Hill where they met with Senators and Representatives to advocate for the needs of the regions they serve. SRDC is grateful for the opportunity to learn, connect, and bring valuable insights back to support the communities of Southwest Minnesota.
