Hoppe Airspray – Built for the Field, Backed by Family

What began as a small agricultural aviation business in 1978 has since taken flight, both literally and figuratively. Hoppe Airspray, based in Beaman, Iowa, has deep roots in the Midwest’s farming landscape. Originally founded by Willie Hoppe, the company was purchased in 2009 by Dan Tonner and Roy Sharp, who expanded its fleet and customer base. Ben and Megan Olsem joined the team in 2014, working alongside the crew and gaining hands-on experience in the field. They eventually became the third owners, fully committed to carrying on the legacy and continuing to treat the business like family.

“We may have changed hands over the years,” said Ben Olsem, “but Hoppe Airspray has always felt like a family business. Megan and I are both hands-on, and many of our close friends work alongside us. That’s why our motto is ‘Built for the Field, Backed by Family.’

Hoppe Airspray is proud to remain a locally owned aerial application business serving farmers across Iowa and Minnesota. We regularly collaborate with co-ops and ag retailers, offering a flexible and personalized approach that keeps strong relationships at the center of everything we do.

Services and Commitment to Safety

At Hoppe Airspray, we provide high-quality aerial application services across the midwest. We’re committed to helping farmers protect their crops with fast, safe, and reliable service.

Safety remains a top priority for the Olsems and their crew. The fleet includes ten agricultural aircraft—all equipped with the latest GPS guidance and flow control technology. Every aircraft is meticulously maintained, and pilots stay current with all training and certifications. Behind each successful application is a well-coordinated team effort between dispatchers, pilots, and ground crew.

Growing with SRDC’s Support

When demand began to rise, Hoppe Airspray knew they needed to grow their capacity. That’s where the Southwest Regional Development Commission’s Revolving Loan Fund (RLF) came in.

“The RLF program was a huge help,” said Olsem. “We used it to purchase additional aircraft at a crucial time. It allowed us to expand our operations, bring in more help, and keep pace during our busiest season.”

That expansion also brought job growth and economic support to the region. Hoppe Airspray now plays an even larger role in helping farmers protect their yields and meet their seasonal application needs.

“The RLF process was smooth, and the staff were knowledgeable and helpful. I’d absolutely recommend it to other small businesses.”

Looking Ahead

As agriculture evolves, Hoppe Airspray is staying grounded in its values while planning carefully for the future.

For Ben and Megan, the most rewarding part of the job is not just measured in acres sprayed or planes flown. It is found in the relationships they have built along the way.

The Southwest Regional Development Commission (SRDC) offers Revolving Loan Fund (RLF) financing to help support small businesses like Hoppe Airspray with gap funding for expansion, equipment purchases, and job creation. These low-interest loans are designed to complement traditional financing and foster economic growth across the region.
